What professional development requirements does a school in Louisiana need to meet?
According to Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 17:437.1, all teachers, school counselors, and principals must participate annually in at least two hours of in-service training in suicide prevention. The training should include:
- Mental health and substance abuse conditions.
- Childhood abuse, neglect, and trauma.
- Potential causes of stress, such as bullying, harassment, and relationship problems.
- Secondary trauma from a suicide or sensationalized or graphic accounts of suicide in media.
- History of suicide attempts and related family history.
Schools must provide a minimum of four hours of bullying prevention training for new employees who have contact with students and two hours of training each year for all school employees who have contact with students.
